If you have been searching “where is Jawai” and getting three different answers from three different websites, you are not alone. Here at Jawai Leopard Safaris, we get this question almost every week from our guests before they book, so let me clear it up properly, in one place, with no confusion left behind.

Jawai is located in the Pali district of Rajasthan, roughly between Jodhpur and Udaipur. It is not a city or a single point on the map. It is a region of granite hills, open scrubland and small villages spread around the Jawai Dam, and that is exactly why Google Maps sometimes leaves people puzzled.

Why Jawai confuses so many travellers

Most people expect a wildlife destination to work like a national park. One gate, one address, one ticket counter. Jawai does not work that way, and that is actually part of what makes it special.

Jawai is spread across roughly 60 square kilometres of rocky hills, farmland and small hamlets, with no single entry point. Safaris are conducted on private and community land rather than inside a fenced forest boundary. So when you search for “Jawai” on a map, you will see the general area, not one marked destination, and that is where most of the confusion starts.

Is Jawai and Bera the same place?

Short answer, yes, more or less.

Bera is a small village that sits inside the larger Jawai region. Jawai is the name for the entire landscape, the dam, the leopard hills and the surrounding villages, while Bera is simply the most well-known village within it, mainly because most resorts and jawai safari operators are based there. Other villages in the same belt include Sumerpur, Perwa and Bisalpur, where our own base is located.

So if someone tells you they are going to “Bera” and someone else says they are going to “Jawai,” they are very likely talking about the same trip.

Is Jawai a national park?

No, and this is worth knowing before you travel. Jawai is not a national park, and it is not managed the way Ranthambore or Sariska are.

It is officially the Jawai Bandh Leopard Conservation Reserve, notified by the Rajasthan Forest Department in 2010. The leopards here live in the wild, on granite outcrops and in natural caves, often just above villages where people have lived alongside them for generations. Because it is not a gazetted national park, there are no fixed forest gate timings and no official park entry fee. Safaris are arranged privately through resorts and local operators instead, which is also why the experience feels far more personal and far less crowded than a typical forest safari.

If you see any operator charging a separate “national park fee,” that is not an official government charge, since Jawai simply does not have one.

How to reach Jawai

Jawai does not have its own airport or railway station, so most travellers arrive through Jodhpur or Udaipur.

From Jodhpur, the drive is around 150 to 180 km and takes roughly 3 to 4 hours by road via NH62, passing through Rohat, Pali and Falna. Jodhpur airport is the closer of the two major airports if you are flying in.

From Udaipur: This is usually the quicker route, at around 130 to 150 km and about 3 hours by road via NH27. Many guests prefer flying into Udaipur simply because the drive is shorter and passes through some really scenic countryside.

From Jaipur: This is the longest stretch, at close to 390 km and around 6 to 7 hours depending on the route you take, either via Beawar or via NH58. If you are short on time, we would recommend flying into Jodhpur or Udaipur instead and driving from there.

By train: The nearest railway stations are Jawai Bandh (about 15 to 20 km from most safari camps) and Mori Bera, which is closer still at around 5 km. Falna station is a little further out but has more frequent train connections from Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Delhi.
